The unstoppable Welsh alternative crew, Revolution Rabbit Deluxe charge on with their thunderous new single and video, 'Parabellum' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR9lHLMpse4. The alt crew recently signed a deal with the indie imprint Bad Monkey Records. Loaded with a new single and with the promise of their sixth album on the way, with the band on the rise, we caught up with the guys to find out more...
The line-up is Rev Rabbit (Guitar, Synths, Vox); Max Perera (Guitar, Vox); Lee Titters (Drums) and Tim Lawley (Bass).
How and when did the band form? Also, can you tell us anything interesting about your hometown?
Rev Rabbit: The band originated as a solo project by Rev Rabbit, but it expanded with members from an autism group that I was attending. Those members have long since departed, but that musical journey led me to Max, our amazing lead guitarist and an awesome drummer, Lee. Sadly, Jim, the bassist, left a few weeks ago due to work commitments, but we have found a great replacement, Tim.
Newbridge was named after its mayor's new dental bridge. It replaced the original name Crapton-on-Sea in 1878.
When and how did the band start gelling and solidifying?
Up until 'The Great Divide', all the albums were produced and performed by Rev Rabbit, but on the fifth album, 'Control Freaks', the instrumentation was opened up to the others. Max's ability to write catchy lead hooks lifted the whole sound, as did the introduction of Lee on drums. The music was freed and flew far higher than Rev Rabbit could ever imagine—and he has some powerful imagination.
Who are your musical influences?
Musically, we all share a love of alt-rock and post-punk influences such as the Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Manic Street Preachers, and Feeder, to name a few. It is these that spark our endeavours. Rev Rabbit also adores the Beatles for their melodic influence.
Rev Rabbit: Lyrically similar to Billy Bragg and XTC, most of the songs are inspired by politics, inequalities or general injustices in the modern world. I used to write melody first but have recently started writing from lyrics first. It can be harder that way, but the words are important to our message, which hopefully elevates or inspires people to think and act in new ways while still being entertained...hopefully. The situation in America is a huge inspiration for me at the moment.
Where did the name of the band come from?
I was bored during a long car journey and was thinking of band names for a potential project. I've long loved rabbits, so I wanted the band name to include rabbits. Then an image of the iconic Che Guevara poster popped into my head, with his face replaced by a rabbit. I started to laugh and knew it had to be Revolution Rabbit. The Deluxe came after and was just a cherry on top.
Name one crazy, interesting, or wild fact or story about the band or a specific member.
Rev Rabbit: Lee unilaterally owns over 50% of the band's hair, but will he share? Nope!
Max: I live in Caerphilly, home of the famous cheese festival. Fun fact: There is usually no cheese found anywhere at this festival. Ant is a published dystopian science fiction author.
How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?
I have known Lee and Max since they joined the band over two years ago, but it feels like longer. Is that a good or a bad thing, Max and Lee??? Tim joined recently but has fitted in well, personally and musically.
Are you friends from school or any family relations?
Rev Rabbit: We rescued Max (Lead Guitar) from an inflatable that had drifted from shore. At the time, she was singing "Where is my Mind?" by the Pixies, so I forced her to learn lead guitar just to fit in with the band. Lee (Drums) we found hitchhiking, and Tim (Bass) we picked up on an eBay auction. I'm still waiting for my refund.
Where have you played or toured?
We've played extensively in the UK and once formed the backing band for Jeremy Gluck of Barracudas fame.
In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?
Very few bands are riding the line between political commentary and entertaining melodic hooks. We are unique in that we are strident about our message and would love our music to challenge others. We are a mishmash of all our influences plus our own unique interactions within the band.
If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?
Dynamic driving drums that give a sense of urgency to the melodic but hard-hitting guitars and thrusting bass to add to the angst of the lyrics.
