A Northampton, UK based guitar teacher Rory, has turned his business and its industry on its head throughout last years’ and this years' lockdowns. This guitar school has cracked the code for motivating new and old guitar players alike. Rory created The Guitar Ninja Academy, guitar tuition with a difference, instead of just learning to play the guitar or improve in the usual set up, he has made it so you are motivated initially to do the lessons and not just the end goal. He has achieved this turning it into a more fun almost game inspired experience where you can create and customise your own character avatar, backgrounds, amps and more, the more you learn, the more you unlock to upgrade and customise your character and grow your in-game fanbase, even earning fans. If you don't play regularly you will even lose fans. This is a clever and fun concept and as a guitarist myself, this excited me so I tried it out with the free account that they offer.
When you first log in you are greeted with helpful information pop-ups to guide you through the site. The overall appearance and look of the site is good with a nice, interesting and colourful design.
It was easy and didn't take me long to initially set up my character and customise, you have to earn 'coins' to buy/unlock more options as you go.
You have the option to choose a course which is done by ‘straps’, beginners playlists (covers warmups, scales, riffs of the week, songs to learn), as well as more intermediate lessons such as techniques, music theory ect, backing tracks to jam along to which nice feature. I started at the very beginning level course just to see how progression works and the strap system, this works well and covers what you would expect whilst keeping it fun and engaging. It has some good features like riff of the week and each tutorial video includes tab charts and is very informative and Rory delivers with passion and enthusiasm throughout.
It also has a ‘games’ section which is a fun way of testing your learning with some quick-fire quiz questions to put your learning to the test and keep you engaged at all times.
This is a fun and engaging guitar tutorial experience that stands out for its innovation and games based concept which should appeal and keep budding guitarists and those returning to the instrument motivated and inspired. I have used and tried a few online guitar tutorial lessons/courses and while the content and delivery have always been quality and helpful, motivation is crucial so The Guitar Ninja has honed in on that aspect with the end result being more entertaining than the standard structure of online lessons and giving it an extra creative layer as you can design and create your own avatar and gives you more reason to keep at it and go back for more.
