RIVIA, the four-piece band from Liverpool, announce Down & Out as their third independent single release and it comes with a message about lack of creativity in our education system.
Down & Out tells the story of each band members struggle as young musicians trying to make their way in the local scene. Many musicians can relate to the constant mocking of their ambitions from others, negative comments like ‘get a real job’ or ‘you are wasting your time’. “That mindset has to change” says Matt, “Ambition and creativity, should be encouraged, not discouraged”.
Being locked inside amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, band mates Matt, Warren, Peter and Chris wanted to use their next single as a message, that message is one of creativity. The question of what to do with all this free time for many is a difficult question to answer. The boys from RIVIA want to encourage people to let their creativity flourish.
Throughout our childhood we are told at school we must learn x, y and z and that learning those things is far more important than developing our personal creativity. The boys think that, too often, we are telling our youth you can’t do something because it is ‘unrealistic’ or ‘not a viable career choice’. For this reason, RIVIA believe the education system is broken.
Matt Sloan, 23, singer and founding member of the band said: “I really struggled in a standard learning environment. I tried doing higher education, but it wasn’t for me and I ended up leaving sixth form at sixteen. I started gigging, became self-employed and since then that’s been my job and I love it.
“I think it’s sad that there is little support, if any, for students who want to be self-employed. Why are we teaching our kids to be employees when we should be teaching them to be the new employers? There is more opportunity, with the technology available today, to be your own boss and innovate. Our education system doesn’t support those creative minds, who might be less academic.
“Now, more than ever, with the quarantine, people have the time to be creative and express themselves. Imagine if we didn’t have art, music, film or literature during this lockdown, it would be unbearable.”
