I catch up with fresh metal quintet from Perth, Australia, Patient Sixty-Seven who blend the best parts of metal and rock genres to create their own sound. I ask about their origins, what they are currently working on and what lies ahead for the future. So be sure to read on and check out their compelling and electrifying metal...
Great band name, is this referring to Shutter Island? Can you tell us a bit about it and how you arrived at this?
For sure! And thank you - the title is indeed a reference to Shutter Island.
To tell you the truth, the name sort of came about one day while the band was in its early stages. It’s a favourite movie of mine, and the name honestly just stuck straight away haha - I kind of threw it out there as suggestion to our guitarist Dylan and he was like, yep - that’ll do.
The name itself definitely represents a lot of incredible themes within the movie, and similar themes are covered in our music - such as self-reflection, deception and coming to terms with reality. It’s a great watch, honestly haha.
In keeping with you name, what is the best therapy for you after a hard day of rocking out?
Sleep and more sleep haha. And food, that’s always good.
For those not familiar, how would you best describe your music and what makes you stand out as a band?
Just really energetic, there’s usually a bit happening and we try to bring that to our live shows.
Everything we put into our music is all heart, and we just try and be honest with ourselves. We hope people who catch us live can take something away from it, and have a good time with it all! From a genre standpoint, we try to kind of fuse a few different styles together to create our own brand of metal. It’s a lot of fun.
You formed in 2014, how did you all meet and go on to create the band?
It’s interesting, it really came about from myself and our guitarist Dylan writing music for fun. It gained momentum after we enjoyed what we were writing and looked to expand to a full band and play live music. Some of our best friends joined the group and here we are! It all really snowballed and if you had of told me two years ago that we’d be here I wouldn’t believe you!
So your debut EP, ‘Inbalance’ released last year (2015) impressively reached number two on the Australian ITunes Metal chart, this must have been a proud milestone for you as a band? How did this make you feel?
Yeah I mean, it was largely due to internal support from friends and family, and a few generous fans! It was really humbling, we definitely didn’t expect it and we were all so thankful people got behind us like they did.
Following on from this, what are your biggest ambitions as a band that you would like to achieve?
Just to continue to have fun in creating, and playing live shows. We obviously want to put our best foot forward and continue to grow as a band. The aim is to continue to put what we have into this and see what happens.
You have recently released new single, ‘Callous’, what can you tell us about the song and meaning of it?
The single dropped June 5, and the response has been truly incredible. We’re so lucky to have some wonderful people supporting our band and what we do.
The song is really just about dealing with toxic relationships we all face in our life. It’s just about facing it head on, finding some sort of acceptance in it - and moving on from it. Leaving nothing behind, but obviously with that comes a bit of struggle in itself. I really tried to be honest and open with myself on this one.
How happy have you been with the response to it so far?
Incredibly happy, people have been really supportive and we do believe it’s our strongest showing yet.
Can we expect to hear more new music this year?
Fingers crossed! If it takes longer, it’s only because we want to make sure its perfect.
How would you say your new material differs or compares with your well received debut EP?
We just want (and hope) that it’s a lot stronger on all fronts. The heavy parts are heavier, the melodic parts are catchier, the electronics are bigger. We just want to step it up in every way we can with this new stuff, and that’s our collective goal going forward.
What would you say are your main influences, both musically and creatively?
I listen to a lot of hip-hop, I know that’s not the newest thing to be citing - but it genuinely is my favourite genre of music at the moment. In terms of heavy music, my favourite band has always been Confide and they’ll always continue to influence me. I know everyone in the band all have different influences which is what I think makes this work, in a way!
Are you heading out on tour soon? What can attending fans expect from your shows?
We definitely have plans to visit some new places soon! Stay tuned.
If you come out to a show, just to have a good time and bring a lot of energy!
What else can we expect from Patient Sixty-Seven this year?
Just to keep building on 2015, music, shows, good times and great people. Keep an eye on our social networks and we’ll give you all the news as it happens!
Finally, is there anything else you would like to add or share with us? (Even if it is some incomprehensible crazy ramblings!)
Just that we are incredibly thankful for all of your support. We couldn’t do this without you - and we hope to see you at a show soon! Thank you for spreading the word and backing us in.
